Spring 2001
Co-President's Report
By Stuart Altschuler, MFT

On March 3, I had the pleasure of attending the first LAGPA event in San Diego. When LAGPA first formed in Los Angeles it was mainly a gay male organization. It took a number of years for the community of gay male therapists and lesbian therapists to come together in a way that found ground for mutual support, respect and trust. We are still looking to include the Bi and Transgendered part of our community. Nevertheless, I am pleased to experience an organization that actively seeks to bring men and women together with a single purpose and a sense of enthusiasm.

In San Diego, I got to experience being the only gay man in a room with 9 lesbian mental health workers. I loved the enthusiasm, mixed with a little skepticism, about forming a LAGPA chapter. I appreciated the discussion regarding possible academic forums that included topics relevant to the men who were absent, as well as to the women in attendance. I loved seeing old friends reconnecting and new friendships being formed. I enjoyed listening to these women finding out about the work others are doing in their own community. "Community" is the essence of what LAGPA is about, why it was formed, why we join, and why some of us chose to become active members in the organization and planning process.

I hope that all of you will consider your part in the support of the LAGPA "community". I hope that more of you will support the formation of the San Diego and Long Beach chapters of LAGPA by telling your friends in those regions and even traveling to their events. I rather enjoyed making a weekend trip for this event. The Amtrak made it stress free and convenient and the group made me feel welcome and fully a part of their community. Thank you Beatriz Gandara for your efforts. San Diego is fortunate to have you in their community and LAGPA is honored that you are in our community.
