The summer months are usually a time to take a
respite from work, and rejuvenate oneself for the onslaught of the fall and winter months of
work. GLSEN-Los Angeles has found a way to combine fun and work, through their annual fund
raiser, The Graduation Party. July
22 saw an evening filled with celebrities, and politicians, such as Council member Jackie
Goldberg, Council member Joel Wachs, West Hollywood Mayor Jeff Prang, gathering together to
celebrate the accomplishments of the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network, a professional
association which serves to end bias and hate in schools across the country. Hosted at the
house of an executive board member and avid supporter of work with gay, lesbian, bisexual, and
transgender youth, the event gathered over 400 persons who contributed generously to the local
chapter of GLSEN, so as to continue the work of those who strive to make schools a safer place
for sexual minority youth.
A host committee member, Bill Mochon,
PsyD, assisted in the development of the event, including securing items for the silent
auction conducted, arranging for various political and local community members, and was on
hand to greet each person who attended, including several LAGPA members, and past speakers,
such as Greg Cason, PhD, and Charlie Lang, MFT. Through the months of preparation, Mochon was
able to work closely with many persons who share the passion for assisting youth as they
explore their sexual identity and develop as young gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender
persons.
Discussions have begun for the successful
production of next years event, open to anybody who wishes to support and participate in
the work that GLSEN accomplishes. To make sure that you are included in next years
event, as well as being kept updated about the various programs, publications and public
events that GLSEN offers throughout the year, please contact Bill Mochon, PsyD at (818)
569-0867, and he will gladly share with you whatever information you may immediately request. |
