Chris D. Cooper, PhD

Chris D. Cooper, PhD

I have been licensed since 2001 in both California and Massachusetts.  Since then have provided individual therapy to adult clients and older teens.  I am also the Consulting Clinical Director of the Assessment Program at the Institute for Girls' Development in Pasadena, CA.  At the Institute we provide psychological and neuropsychological assessments for people of all gender-identities aged 6 or older.

In addition, I am able to provide some consultation services in both psychotherapy and assessment as well as case consultation.

Currently, because of the coronavirus, all of my work is being done online via a secure Zoom platform.  This means I am able to see new clients who live in either California or Massachusetts.   My home office is in Pasadena, CA but in normal circumstances I travel to Massachusetts several times each year.

My background includes a masters degree in Biological Sciences and eight years of teaching in the Department of Biological Sciences at Wellesley College.  My focus there was in cell physiology and my interest in neuroscience developed there.  In 1989 I began a PhD program at the University of Southern Californa in Clinical Psychology.  I obtained my degree in 1995 and interned at LA+USC County Hospital.  This was followed by a 4-year post-doctral postition in clinical/counseling psychology at the USC Medical Campus.

My theoretical focus in psychotherapy draws from feminist theory and the Relational-Cultural theory developed by Drs. Jean Baker Miller, Judith Jordon and other women at the Stone Center at Wellesley College.  My belief is that people grow through relationships and I strive to grow over the years as I work with my clients.  My work is LGBTQ/Nonbinary affirming and I strive to be a positive force in combatting racism and ethno-centrism.
